Playshops

My highly interactive playshops engage the voice in a myriad of ways. Many of them integrate writing, movement, music and other creative modalities, which enrich and deepen the experience. I also offer experiences focused on more structured musical formats.

The flagship 'Voicebody Playshop' is an introduction to exploring a continuum between vocal expression that emerges as you tune into your inner landscape, and using the voice as an improvisatory instrument in a more playful and musical way. Other playshops delve deeper into this experience, or lean into the more playful, musically structured aspects vocal expression.

" What was really interesting for me was how good my body felt when I would do different sounds. Sometimes it almost felt like I was massaging  different areas!"

Voicebody playshop: An introduction to authentic vocal improvisation

Explore the power of creative vocal self-expression, of connecting with breath, body, voice, and each other. Enjoy grounding meditation, vocal warmups, group, duo and solo experiences in a judgement-free space. Release your inner critic, and learn to allow your voice to express all the selves you are, transforming this expression into engaging, creative play. There are no wrong or ugly sounds in Voiceplay space. Think you can’t carry a tune? This playshop is for you. Love to sing and play? This playshop is for you. Feel shy about making silly sounds but want to give it a try? This playshop is for you!

Feed the form: Authentic voice and spoken and sung word

This playshop is designed for those who want to move beyond the improvisatory, using authentic voiceplay to inspire spoken and sung word pieces. Through an interplay of meditation, authentic voicework, improvisation, journalling, intentional experimentation, and collaborative feedback, we develop spoken/sung word structures.

Sound circle

We sit together in a circle as loving witnesses to each other's authentic voicework, then join together in unique harmony. This offering is s a multi-session experience, and affords an opportunity to support individual work, and bond in sound with group members. With much love to Sara 'Saruha' Benson and Molly Scott, who started me out on this journey.

Circlesinging playshop

Enjoy being part of a group vocal sound improvisation. No singing experience required. Just bring your ears, your voice, your sense of play and your open heart! This is a low-risk playshop because you sing short, repeatable phrases in unison with a small group. As you get more comfortable, you can take the opportunity to create and lead the larger group in an improvised song. With much thanks to Bobby McFerron for his gift of Circlesinging.

Music improv for everyone

We are all musicians. Yes, we are! I mean you! Whether you identify as a musician, or simply a music-lover, join us for an energetic sound improvisation gathering. Bring any instruments you like, especially ones that you are willing to share (if you aren’t, that’s fine – it’s not required or judged.) This playshop assumes no previous musical experience, just a love of sound, of creative freedom, and an adventurer’s soul. We will use small duo, small group, and whole group formats to allow authentic improvisations to emerge – some may be based on prompts, others totally free. There will be opportunities to reflect and respond creatively  in movement and spoken word, as well as plenty of space for individual reflection and journalling. With thanks to Paul Winter, who encouraged us to go forth and make his teachings our own.
